Why did Britain allow Canada to form its own country?

I know Canada still has ceremonial ties to Britain. But why did Britain allow Canada to separate via confederation, yet fought to try to stop the American revolution? Sure the Canadians were Loyalists back then, but today they're practically completely independent. Britain could still be a major power today if they still had Canada's land and resources.
