4 month old teething bad?

tried everything and the only thing that works is the tylenol, but i dont want to give it to him often.. we've gone from colic, to teething, literally.. and im wondering, do they teeth until the tooth pokes through, then you get a break until the next one decides to, or what? am I pretty much doomed with a screaming baby until he's a year old?
