I need some photographer advice!?

I've been using an Olympus digital camera it's 8 mega pixles. I don't know anything about professional cameras or any of that lingo, I was hopeing I could get some advice. I'm talking a photography cl next year to hopefully learn more but I'd really love to save up and purchase a nikon or canon I'm just not quite sure what to look for. I've been told I have a very artistic eye, I want a camera with good detail and lighting. Any advice is much appreciated!
