Learning to play by ear? Guitar vs. Piano?

I can play both piano and guitar. Piano a little better than guitar. I want to take the next step and learn to play by ear. I've read that doing so on the piano is much easier than on guitar since the note layout on the piano is much more intuitive. That being said, I would much prefer to be able to do so on guitar. So here is my question: If I learn to play by ear on one instrument, will it translate on another instrument without much extra effort?
